Key Components of the IBDP Theory of Knowledge(TOK) Curriculum 2022

The IBDP Theory of Knowledge course is structured around:

Core Theme: Knowledge and the Knower This foundational theme within Theory of Knowledge invites you to explore your own perspective as a knower, considering how your personal experiences, values, and cultural background shape your understanding of the world. It delves into questions about individual cognition and the role of communities of knowers in shaping knowledge.

Optional Themes: These themes provide specific lenses through which to examine knowledge in different contexts. Popular and relevant optional themes include:

  • Knowledge and Technology: How does technology influence the creation, dissemination, and even the nature of knowledge? (Consider AI technological advancements in the context of TOK).
  • Knowledge and Language: How does language shape our reality, perceptions, and the way we categorise knowledge?
  • Knowledge and Politics: How does political power influence what is accepted as knowledge, and what are the ethical implications?
  • Knowledge and Religion: How do different religious knowledge systems construct meaning and validate claims compared to other areas of knowledge?
  • Knowledge and Indigenous Societies: Exploring the rich tapestry of knowledge in indigenous cultures and challenging mainstream knowledge systems through the lens of Theory of Knowledge.

Areas of Knowledge (AOKs): You will study five compulsory Areas of Knowledge, which are structured disciplines within which human knowledge is organised. These are crucial for your TOK essay and understanding the breadth of the Theory of Knowledge:

  • Natural Sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Physics – examining empirical evidence, scientific methodology, and the pursuit of objective truth within this area of Theory of Knowledge.
  • Human Sciences: Psychology, Economics, Anthropology, Sociology – exploring human behaviour, societies, and the challenges of objectivity.
  • Mathematics: The nature of proof, abstract reasoning, and the role of axioms in constructing mathematical knowledge.
  • History: The interpretation of past events, the role of evidence, and the challenges of historical bias.
  • The Arts: Exploring aesthetic judgment, interpretation, creativity, and the role of emotion in artistic knowledge.

Assessment in TOK: Exhibition and Essay

Your TOK journey culminates in two key assessment components that demonstrate your understanding of Theory of Knowledge:

TOK Exhibition (Internally Assessed, 33% weighting)

This component requires you to create an exhibition of three objects that explore how TOK manifests in the world around us. You’ll choose one of the 35 IA prompts provided by the IB and select objects that allow you to demonstrate your understanding of the core or optional themes and their connection to real-world situations, applying principles of Theory of Knowledge. Key considerations include:

  • Choosing specific, rather than generic, objects.
  • Justifying your choice of objects and their relevance to the prompt.
  • Ensuring a clear link between your objects and the TOK concepts discussed in class (e.g., perspective, evidence, justification, bias, truth, belief, certainty).

TOK Essay on a Prescribed Title (Externally Assessed, 67% weighting)

For this, you will write a 1,600-word essay in response to one of six prescribed titles issued by the IB for each examination session. These titles are open-ended knowledge questions that require you to discuss and evaluate claims within and across different Areas of Knowledge, drawing on your insights from Theory of Knowledge. Examples of past essay prompts include:

  • “To what extent do you agree with the claim that ‘there’s a world of difference between truth and facts’ (Maya Angelou)? Answer with reference to two areas of knowledge.”
  • “Within an area of knowledge, is it more important to have credibility or power? Discuss with reference to the natural sciences and one other area of knowledge.”
